Illicit economic activity is increasingly transacted through illegal online marketplaces on parts of the Internet called the Deep and Dark Web. Unfortunately, the scale and scope of these illicit marketplaces are greatly outpacing traditional capabilities that law enforcement agencies have to counter these threats. To address this challenge, the US government has made significant investments to develop data-driven artificial intelligence tools to improve law enforcement’s ability to better understand and disrupt these illegal marketplaces, in particular by exposing the illegal activities perpetrators conduct on these sites. Charlie K. Dagli PhD, Research Lead at MIT's Lincoln Laboratory, will describe several of these technologies in detail and show how they are having significant impact on law enforcement missions, especially for the Human Trafficking Response Unit at the New York County District Attorney’s Office.
