Mad Pride Day

Today is Mad Pride Day. Much like the LGBTQIA+ community has reclaimed the word “queer” and disabled community has reclaimed the word “crip,” the mentally ill community has reclaimed the word “mad” as an identifier of pride and celebrates their “mad” identities on this day. Mad Pride Day also raises awareness about the abuses of psychiatry and institutionalization. Mad Pride Day is celebrated on 14 July in concurrence with Bastille Day—on which, during the French Revolution, the Bastille was stormed by citizens, liberating mad prisoners held on arbitrary and unappealable orders.
