Duke Ellington and the Harlem Renaissance

Jazz vocalist Nanette Perrotte brings the stories and songs of the Harlem Renaissance to life in this music and history presentation.

Ellington was a composer, dreamer, businessman and a part of the Harlem Renaissance Big Band movement. Jazz vocalist Nanette Perrotte brings the story of the great songs and Harlem culture that was the cradle of Jazz. There are moments in history that are “hot house” moments – times when music, poetry, art and dance bubble, steam, and grow into a style that lasts and lasts. This moment of the Jazz era in Harlem, N.Y. brought us Duke Ellington and his superstar orchestra swinging the nights away at the Cotton Club along with poets, writers and dancers such as Langston Hughes, Ella Fitzgerald and Cab Calloway
