LiveWires Presents: All That Jazz: Swing Music in the Great Depression

On August 21, 1935 the Benny Goodman Orchestra was slowly losing its young audience with staid tunes at the Polomar Ballroom in L.A., when Gene Krupa, his drummer, suggested  playing  "hot" swing tunes.  " If we're going to die, Benny, let's die playing our own thing." Thus began an exuberant performance thrilling thousands of young fans in the audience and millions more tuning in to a live NBC radio broadcast.  In this presentation historian Dan Leclerc will trace the history of swing and play energetic historic video recordings of such artists as Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Paul Whiteman, Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Anita O’Day.
